In order to use the Shotgun Slug Ammo in Sons of the Forest, you will have to first open your inventory and select the Slug Ammo, dropping it on the ground. When it is selected, you have to take out your Shotgun.
At that moment, you will have to look at the ground and select the Slug Ammo to use on your Shotgun. Press “R” on your Keyboard to use the Slug Ammo while looking at the ground.
