Lily-Rose Depp and The Weeknd in HBO Series “The Idol”

The Weeknd is ready to take over the television world after making his mark on the music industry. The Canadian-singer, Abel Tesfaye is well known for his music. The singer’s latest album “After hours” received a lot of praise from fans and critics. The singer will appear in the upcoming show “The Idol” which he also co-produced. Sam Levinson, known for his hit show HBO show Euphoria co-created the show with Reza Fahim and Abel.

Plot

According to the trailer, The Idol is “The sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood.” The Weeknd will play the role of an entrepreneur and a cult leader who starts a romantic relationship with a young pop star played by Lily-rose Depp. However, there is not much information available about the plot of the series.

Who is directing “The Idol”?

The show’s aesthetic is similar to Sam Levinson’s hit creation “Euphoria”. Also, the upcoming series is shot on film and is a lot wilder than Euphoria. Levinson described in an interview why he opted for film to shoot the recent season of Euphoria;

“We always imagined the show being shot on film. There is an inherent nostalgia to film. Each character, in their head, is the star of their own movie, which [for this show] immediately breaks it from the realism of being a teenager and into the imagination. Film has always been larger than life, and we wanted the ways in which we pushed and manipulated film stock to echo that.”

Also, according to a source, “The idol” has undergone production changes as the “Blinding Lights” singer had issues with the direction of the show. According to the singer, the series was leaning into a “female perspective” and focused more on Depp’s character than his. Amy Seimetz, who was directing the show at the beginning left after the singer expressed his dissatisfaction with the direction of the series. Seimetz is known for co-creating The Girlfriend Experience and starring in Netflix’s hit show Stranger Things.

Sam Levison is now directing the show for HBO. However, Levinson has received a lot of criticism recently for his portrayal of “teenagers” and “female nudity” in his show Euphoria. Levinson’s lack of diverse writing also led Barbie Ferreira to leave Euphoria.

The Idol Release Date

There is no news about the release date of The Idol yet. The show is expected to release by the end of 2022. Major changes were made when Seimetz left the show and half of the show was filmed as well. So, it is hard to say anything about the release date of the show.
