Netflix’s this year’s hit action movie “The Gray Man” will return for a sequel. The movie received positive reviews from the audience. The film was released in cinemas across the US and was released on the streaming platform after a week on 22nd July 2022. This movie was Ryan Gosling’s first project in 4 years. The Canadian actor took a break to determine the “direction” of his career. The Gray Man Sequel is confirmed by Netflix.
According to Netflix’s official blog “Tudum,” the streaming platform is working on The Gray Man sequel or a spin-off movie. Anthony Russo told his plans about the sequel in an interview with Tudum;
“Having a bunch of interesting characters creates a lot of possibilities in terms of where you’re gonna go in future storytelling, because there’s so many compelling characters played by so many compelling actors and they’re all worth further exploration.”
The Gray Man Sequel Plot
The movie is based on the book series of the same name by Mark Greaney. There are 11 books in the series and the plot of the upcoming sequel might follow the second book “On Target”.
Anthony Russo said this about the possible plot of the upcoming projects;
Mark Greaney has written a whole series of wonderful books for us to draw from. I can’t get too specific about where we see the character going on the next movie because it’s so early days, but we designed a big ensemble in this film because we love ensemble storytelling. Having a bunch of interesting characters creates a lot of possibilities in terms of where you’re gonna go in future storytelling, because there’s so many compelling characters played by so many compelling actors and they’re all worth further exploration”
Stephen McFeely will return to co-write the script with Russo Brother. McFeely also wrote the script for AGBO production’s other project “The Electric state” and he also wrote the screenplay for Avengers: Endgame and Captain America: Civil war.
Spin-off Movies
Russo brothers want to expand the universe of “The Gray Man” and it means that there will be multiple spin-off movies. However, the brothers have not revealed anything about the upcoming spin-off projects. But, some fans suspect that the spin-off movie could be about “Lone Wolf” (Avik San). Also, there are rumors about a prequel movie based on agent “Lloyd Hansen”.
The Russo brothers said this when asked about the upcoming projects in an interview;
“The audience reaction to The Gray Man has been nothing short of phenomenal. We are so appreciative of the enthusiasm that fans across the world have had for this film. With so many amazing characters in the movie, we had always intended for the Gray Man to be part of an expanded universe, and we are thrilled that Netflix is announcing a sequel with Ryan, as well as a second script that we’re excited to talk about soon.”
According to the brothers, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese will write the screenplay for the upcoming spin-off movie.
The Gray Man Sequel Release Date
There is no news on when future projects will hit the streaming service. The filming of the original movie started in March 2021. So, the sequel might follow the same schedule and could be released in 2024.
