Netflix Ryan Murphy’s ‘The Watcher’ Release Date, Cast and Plot

“The Watcher” is Netflix’s upcoming limited series based on a chilling true story. American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy is behind the project. The writer/director is making headlines for his other limited series for Netflix based on America’s notorious killer Jeffrey Dahmer released last week which received mixed reviews from the critics. The upcoming series is part of the 5-year deal he made with Netflix. Ryan Murphy’s previous projects with Netflix include Ratched, Hollywood, and Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

The series is based on a true story published in The Cut magazine. Netflix announced the news about the upcoming project in back February 2021.

The Watcher Release Date

The Watcher will release on October 13, 2022, for Netflix’s Halloween line-up. Netflix’s 2022 Halloween lineup includes projects like Wednesday, and Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer story. The other upcoming Ryan Murphy project that is coming to the streaming platform this fall is Mr. Harigan’s phone. The production of the series started in September 2021 and ended in March 2022. Also, the series is filmed in Brooklyn.

Plot

The series will follow the story of the article of the same name published in November 2018 by Reeves Wideman. The article is about a creepy incident that happened with Derek and Maria Broaddus when they purchased a house at 657 Boulevard in Westfield N.J in 2014. The family started to receive creepy letters with terrifying messages from an unknown person “The Watcher”. The Watcher claimed that he has been watching their house for years. Also, one of his letters said that the walls of the house craved the “young blood” of one of their three children, however, the letters led the family to leave their house and they sold it for about $959,000.

Netflix immediately purchased the rights to create a limited series based on the article. According to some sources, Netflix won the bidding war against six other production houses. Netflix initially planned to make a movie but ended up making a limited series of 7 episodes.

The official synopsis of the series according to Netflix is;

“Ominous letters. Strange neighbors. Sinister threats. A family moves into their suburban dream home, only to discover they’ve inherited a nightmare.”

Cast

Naomi Scott will play Maria Broaddus. Scott is known for appearing in movies like King Kong and Netflix’s Gypsy. Bobby Cannavale will play Derek Broaddus, the actor is famous for his roles in The Station Agent and Big mouth. Jennifer Coolidge will play the estate agent Karen in the series. Other cast members include Noma Dumezweni, Mia Farrow, Seth Gabel, Chris McDonald, and Margo Martindale.

Trailer

Netflix released the trailer of the series as a viral campaign ad and also posted a Zillow Listing to promote the upcoming series. Jennifer Coolidge is giving the tour of the house in the trailer as real estate agent Karen Calhoun.
