Sharing the same publisher as Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail is HoYoverse’s fourth installment in the Honkai series. The open-world fantasy RPG features a team system of four characters. Each team ideally includes one or two DPS units, one or two Harmony or Nihility units, and one Preservation or Abundance unit.

Best Early Game Honkai Star Rail Team
Honkai Star Rail features twenty-seven playable characters, only eight of which are free. These free characters are Trailblazer, March 7th, Dan Heng, Asta, Serval, Herta, Natasha, and Qingque. To get the most out of them, go with the following team:
Dan Heng
Dan Heng has one of the highest damage out of the five free-to-play DPS characters available. In a Wind/Hunt unit, his abilities focus on dealing high damage (as much as 240%) to single enemies. His recommended Light Cone is In the Light and his recommended Relic is Eagle of Twilight Line.
Note that this character is quite reliant on his critical rate. As such, upgrading should be your first order of business.
Serval
When talking about damage, Serval is right up there with Dan Heng. An Erudition/Lightning unit rewarded to new players at launch, she relies on debuffs to deal massive damage to opponents. Her recommended Light Cones are Night on the Milky Way and Make the World Clamor. While her recommended Relic is Band of Sizzling Thunder.
This character can both target single enemies and deal Lightning damage to multiple enemies. On top of that, her technique has a 100% base chance of Shocking all enemies for 3 turns.
Asta
As the only free-to-play buff character, Asta is a must-have. A Harmony/Fire unit, Asta is especially good for increasing ally ATK and SPD. The character can also deal significant Fire Damage to both single and multiple enemies.
Coming to Relics, Asta has three solid sets to choose from. The Firesmith of Lava-Forging, Sprightly Vonwacq, and Fleet of the Ageless. Her recommended Light Cone is Planetary Rendezvous.
Trailblazer (Fire)
The fire Trailblazer unlocks after you complete the storyline missions on Jarilo-VI. A supportive Fire/Preservation unit, they function to draw enemy attention while shielding allies and charging attacks.
This character’s recommended Light Cone is Preservation Path. As for Relics, the most recommended option is the 4-piece Knight of Purity Palace.
Alternative Options
If you don’t have Serval, you can swap her out for the Quantum/Erudition Qingque or the Ice/Erudition Herta. And if you haven’t unlocked the Fire Trailblazer yet, you can use the Ice/Preservation on March 7th instead.
