What is Karmic Dice?

Karmic Dice is an in-game feature meant to balance the good and bad results of dice rolls. The feature is on by default and evens out the distribution of outcomes for a fairer playthrough.

In simple terms, if you get a few failed dice rolls in a row, Karmic Dice will shift the odds to increase your chances of success in the next dice roll. But this also applies the other way around. If you get a streak of good luck, the dice will shift the odds to break it.

When to use Karmic Dice

  • If you’re new to Baldur’s Gate and Dungeons & Dragons, keep Karmic Dice on for an easier playthrough. This way, you’re less likely to get caught in long streaks of bad luck.
  • If you keep having bad luck in the game, you might want to turn Karmic Dice on to get yourself some good luck.
  • You can also leave Karmic Dice on if you’re not looking for a hardcore experience and would rather retain the D&D power fantasy.

When to not use Karmic Dice

  • If you want an authentic Dungeons & Dragons experience, it’s better to turn Karmic Dice off. This will keep the in-game dice completely random which is more realistic.
  • You should also turn Karmic Dice off if the game keeps throwing you random curveballs. This can happen if you spec your party well to get an advantage. The dice can view this as you having too many good rolls, and can shift the odds to make things harder for you.
  • There are reports of Karmic Dice helping your enemies avoid failure as well. While Larian claims this wouldn’t happen in the full release, it’s still significant.
  • If you have no problems saving during combat encounters and dialogue sequences and reloading your saves until satisfied, keep Karmic Dice off.

How to turn Karmic Dice On or Off?

Karmic Dice is on by default. To turn it off, head to the Systems menu. Then click on the “User Options” segment. Here you’ll find the Karmic Dice feature in the Gameplay tab. Uncheck the box next to it to disable the feature.

To make sure the feature is off, save and reload the game after disabling Karmic Dice. This is a tried-and-true way to reset RNG in many games.

If you change your mind and want Karmic Dice on in the future, simply check the box next to the feature. There are no restrictions on when you can turn Karmic Dice on or off.
