Rescue Him From Goblins

Want to recruit Halsin? Make sure you rescue him from the goblin camp. You can do this before reaching Emerald Grove or after the events there.

To rescue Halsin, head inside the Shattered Sanctum and past the Priestess Gut’s throne. Then take the wooden bridge on the right. Go through the Worgs Pen door. See the bear inside the cage? That’s Halsin.

Kill the goblins surrounding him, along with the three goblin leaders. Then return to Emerald Grove. Halsin will throw a party at your camp and request to travel with you.

Enter the Shadow Cursed Lands

Enter the Shadow Cursed Lands through either the Underdark or the Mountain Pass at the start of Act 2. Once there, make your way to the Last Light Inn on the northeastern side of the map.

Jaheira, the Druid in charge of the area, will confront you at the inn. But if you rescued the Tieflings from Emerald Grove, a girl called Mol will make Jaheira let you in. Speak with Jaheira again inside the main building, and she will tell you what’s going on.

Talk to Art Cullagh

Afterwards, head to the northern room on the inn’s first floor. On the far bed lies a man named Art Cullagh with a blue halo and text for a song mentioning “Thaniel.”

Talk to him and pass Arcana, Religion, and Medicine checks for the full scope of his condition. Then speak with Halsin at the camp, informing him of the boy mentioning Thaniel.

Join Halsin at Art’s side. He will tell you that the man needs a Battered Lute to wake him up and restore his memories.

Kill Malus Thorm

You can find the Battered Lute on the body of doctor Malus Thorm. He’s in the House of Healing in Reithwin Town, directly south of the Last Light Inn. Attack him, or convince the undead nurses surrounding him to kill him for you. Then loot the body and return to the inn.

Speak to Halsin, and he will tell you to play the lute. Art will then wake up and tell Halsin he needs to find Thaniel. Meet Halsin at a spot near the lake to find out his plans to go save Thaniel from inside the Shadowfell region.

Defend the Portal

Halsin will create a portal to the Shadowfell with a health of 150. Your job is to defend it. Use crowd control moves to take out waves of enemies while keeping them away from the portal. Pay special attention to Wraiths and plagued soldiers.

Recruit Halsin

Once you kill all the enemies, Halsin will come out of the portal with Thaniel in his arms. He will take him back to camp and ask you to meet him there. Doing so leads to a dialogue that will finally allow you to add him to your party.
