Subclasses

The Sorcerer class has three subclasses. Draconic Bloodline, Storm Sorcery, and Wild Magic. All of these are based on elemental wrath and unpredictable spells.

In contrast, the Wizard class has eight subclasses, each focusing on a certain school of magic. These are as follows:

  • School of Abjuration
  • School of Evocation
  • School of Necromancy
  • School of Conjuration
  • School of Enchantment
  • School of Divination
  • School of Illusion
  • School of Illusion

Out of these, Abjuration and Evocation are the best choices considering the game’s combat-heavy nature.

Ability Points

As a Sorcerer, you have to invest most of your ability points into Charisma. And you get four cantrips and two spells at level 1.

While as a Wizard, most of your ability points go into Intelligence. Level 1 Wizards have access to six spells and three weak cantrips.

Spell Acquisition

The Sorcerer learns new spells as he levels up. For example, when you reach level two, you can choose one extra spell. And if you don’t have the space, you can forget an old unneeded spell to choose a new one.

On the other hand, Wizards learn spells from scrolls. They do so by buying spell scrolls and have a much greater spell variety than Sorcerers. They also have more exclusive spells per level.

Spellcasting

Compared to Wizards, Sorcerers feature a very limited number of spells. They rely on their bloodline and books to cast magic. The pro of this ‘intuitive’ approach to magic is that they don’t need to prepare spells. The con? You’re left with a very limited number of spells. Luckily, this can be combated with a library of rings, amulets, etc.

In contrast, Wizards have a much larger repertoire of spells. They rely on spell books and need to prepare the spells they intend to use in each fight in advance. You can change your spells any time outside of battle.

Spell Recovery

A sorcerer’s Sorcery Points recover over a short rest. This means they can cast spells faster and more regularly. Wizards recover expended spell slots once per day during a short rest via Arcane Recovery.

Sorcery Points and Metamagic

There is also Metamagic. This is a Sorcerer ability that lets you customize the way your spells work. You get Sorcery Points from level 2 and can use them to cast Metamagic abilities like Quickened Spell, Twinned Spell, or Distant Spell. You can also use your Sorcery Points to protect your allies from spells requiring saving throws.
